Automated Heating with Zigbee Temperature Sensors and Relay-Controlled Boilers

upaHome's heating automation pairs two things that already exist independently in the system: a Zigbee temperature sensor per room, and a relay channel controlling that room's heating circuit or boiler pump. Neither needs special hardware beyond what a standard upaHome starter kit already includes.

How the pairing works

Each temperature sensor tracks a current reading and a target setpoint. upaHome links a relay channel to a sensor by a label match built into the system - set the two up with matching identifiers during configuration, and the relay switches on when the room is below its target temperature and off once it's reached, the same logic a wall thermostat uses, just per room instead of whole-house.

This is heat-only by design - there's no cooling mode, matching typical European hydronic and electric heating setups rather than forced-air AC systems.

What you need

• A Zigbee temperature and humidity sensor per room you want to control - the starter kit ships with 5x SONOFF SNZB-02D sensors.
• A relay channel per heating zone - either a Waveshare relay HAT channel (included in the starter kit) or a Tasmota-based WiFi relay module, wired to that zone's heating valve, pump, or boiler control input.
• A matching label between the sensor and the relay switch, set once during setup.

Setting and adjusting temperature

Set each room's target temperature from the app, on a schedule, or by voice through Apple HomeKit, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa - "Hey Google, set the Bedroom to 21 degrees" or "Alexa, set the Bedroom to 21 degrees" reaches the same sensor and relay pair as tapping the setpoint in the app.

Once your heating is automated, round out the rest of the house with door, window, motion, and water leak sensors, or add garage door control using the same relay channels.
