UpaSmartHome vs Home Assistant: Which Raspberry Pi Smart Home Platform Fits You?
An honest side-by-side: Home Assistant connects almost everything if you enjoy configuring it; UpaSmartHome is a ready-made phone app for Zigbee heating, relays and alarm sensors on a Raspberry Pi.
Updated
Both run on a Raspberry Pi, both work locally without the cloud, and both can use Zigbee sensors. They are built for different people, though. Here is how they compare, including where Home Assistant is the better choice.
The short answer
- Choose Home Assistant if you want one hub for everything - hundreds of brands, energy dashboards, media players, complex automations - and you enjoy configuring and maintaining it yourself.
- Choose UpaSmartHome if you mainly want room-by-room heating, relays (boiler, lights, garage door) and alarm sensors, controlled from a finished iPhone and Android app, with very little setup.

Where Home Assistant is better
Its range of supported devices and its community are far larger. If you want to tie heating together with solar panels, media players, cameras and dozens of brands in one place, Home Assistant is the stronger platform, and its automation editor can express almost anything.
Where UpaSmartHome is better
It does fewer things, but they work out of the box. Multi-room heating needs no YAML or automation rules: each room with a temperature sensor drives its own relay channel. Water leak, door, motion and vibration sensors send instant push alerts. The phone app is designed around exactly these tasks, so the people you live with can use it without a dashboard you have to build. See the heating automation guide for how it works.
Can you start local-only?
Yes, both. UpaSmartHome's local mode is free, with no account at all - see smart home without the cloud. You only need the cloud plan for remote access, push notifications and the Alexa skill. Hardware options and prices are on the products page.
