Open Your Garage Door with a Zigbee Relay, Google Home, Alexa, or Apple HomeKit

A garage door opener is one of the simplest things to add to a upaHome setup, because it needs exactly what the relay automation feature already does: a channel that toggles on and off. There's no special "garage door" hardware category in upaHome - it's the same relay switch you'd use for a light or a water heater, wired to a different device.

What you need

• A relay module with a dry contact output (a channel that just closes or opens a circuit, rather than switching mains power) - the same kind of thing you'd also use for lights or a boiler pump.
• Your garage door opener's wall-button terminals. Most residential openers trigger open/close from a brief contact closure across two low-voltage terminals - the same two wires a wall button connects to.
• A upaHome Pi controller (or the cloud-connected smarthomeapi backend) already set up on your network.
• Optional but recommended: a Zigbee door/window contact sensor mounted on the garage door itself, so the app actually knows whether the door is open or closed - not just what you last told the relay to do.

How it works

Wire the relay's dry contact output across the opener's wall-button terminals, in place of (or alongside) the physical button. Register the channel as a relay switch through the app or API and give it a clear label like "Garage Door." From then on, turning that switch on and off in the upaHome app closes the same circuit the wall button does.

Because upaHome's relay automation is a plain on/off toggle - not a special "pulse" mode - most garage door openers expect a brief contact closure rather than a held-down signal. Many Zigbee dry-contact relay modules handle this at the hardware level with their own momentary setting; if yours doesn't, simply toggle the switch on and back off from the app in quick succession, the same way you'd tap a wall button.

Add the door contact sensor as an alarm sensor ("contact" kind) and you'll see live open/closed status alongside the relay control - and get a push notification if the door opens when you weren't expecting it.

Voice control

Once the relay switch exists, it's automatically discoverable by Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa - say "Hey Siri, turn on the Garage Door", "Hey Google, turn on the Garage Door", or "Alexa, turn on the Garage Door" and the same relay channel fires. HomeKit talks to your Pi directly over your local network; Google Home and Alexa go through your linked upaHome account in the cloud.
