UpaSmartHome vs Shelly and Tuya / Smart Life Apps: When a Vendor App Is No Longer Enough
Shelly and Tuya apps are the easiest way to start, but they control single devices, often through the cloud. UpaSmartHome turns sensors and relays into local, room-by-room heating and alarms on a Raspberry Pi.
Updated
Most smart homes start the same way: a Shelly relay behind a light switch, or a few cheap Tuya plugs and sensors in the Smart Life app. That works well - until you want the devices to work together, keep working when the internet is down, or run your heating.
The story most people know
You buy a Tuya temperature sensor for the bedroom and a Wi-Fi relay for the electric heater. Both show up in the app, but turning the heater on when the bedroom drops below 20°C needs a cloud "scene", which stops working when the internet or the vendor's server is down. Add a second room, a boiler and a water leak sensor, and you are juggling scenes across apps. UpaSmartHome is built for exactly this step: sensors and relays become one system on a Raspberry Pi in your home.
Side by side
| UpaSmartHome | Shelly app | Tuya / Smart Life | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Local hub software on a Raspberry Pi with its own phone app | App and cloud for Shelly devices | App and cloud for thousands of Tuya-based brands |
| Works without internet | Yes, everything at home runs locally | Devices keep working and have a local web page; the app's remote features use Shelly Cloud | Mostly cloud-based; little works when the internet is down |
| Heating by room | Built in: room sensor + relay = thermostat, plus boiler pump and schedules | Timers and scenes per device | Cloud scenes and automations |
| Alarm sensors | Door/window, motion, water leak, vibration with push alerts | Shelly's own sensors | Wide range of cheap sensors |
| Devices | Zigbee devices via Zigbee2MQTT (including many Tuya Zigbee sensors), Tasmota Wi-Fi relays, Pi relay boards | Shelly devices only | Tuya-based devices only |
| Cost | Free app and local mode; optional cloud 50€/year | Free app; devices are the cost | Free app; Zigbee devices need a Tuya hub |
Where Shelly and Tuya are better
They are the quickest start: buy a device, scan a QR code, done. Shelly relays are small enough to fit behind a wall switch, and many measure power. Tuya has the widest choice of low-cost devices. If all you need is to switch a few lights from your phone, a vendor app is enough.
Where UpaSmartHome is better
It ties sensors and relays together locally. Each room's Zigbee temperature sensor drives its own relay, the boiler and circulation pump follow automatically, and leak or door sensors send push alerts - without depending on a vendor cloud. Many Tuya Zigbee sensors pair straight into UpaSmartHome without the Tuya app or hub; Wi-Fi relays work when they run Tasmota firmware. Shelly devices are not integrated directly.
Bottom line
Keep the vendor app for a few simple switches. Move to UpaSmartHome when you want room-by-room heating, alarms and relays working together without the cloud - see Zigbee vs Wi-Fi devices and products and prices.
